Foreword

The Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) is pleased to release the 2007 Survey of Household Energy Use (SHEU-2007) Detailed Statistical Report, which was a joint project between Statistics Canada and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). This survey collected detailed data on the energy consumption habits of households in Canada for the OEE at NRCan.

The OEE has periodically conducted surveys in a continuing effort to assess the changing characteristics of household energy consumption across Canada. SHEU-2007 is the fourth Survey of Household Energy Use. The previous surveys took place in 1993, 1997 and 2003.

These surveys support the OEE’s mandate to strengthen and expand Canada’s commitment to energy efficiency in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that contribute to climate change.

The primary objective of SHEU-2007 was to gather information on energy use and the factors affecting energy use in households that reside in houses and residential buildings.

More precisely, the survey collected information on

  • dwelling characteristics
  • number and use of appliances, electronics and other energy-consuming products
  • energy efficiency characteristics
  • energy consumption

This detailed statistical report presents the data collected through SHEU-2007 as a general overview of household energy use in Canada. A report entitled 2007 Survey of Household Energy Use – Summary Report, which presents an analysis of the SHEU-2007 data, is also available.

The survey data will increase your knowledge of the various aspects of energy consumption within households. The data also enable NRCan to develop and fine-tune its ecoENERGY programs, which support Canadians as they try to achieve greater energy efficiency and reduce their GHG emissions.
