On September 7, 2011, the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), announced the launch of the SMARTWAY Canada program in January 2012. SMARTWAY Canada is an extension of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay Transport Partnership into Canada.

The program will be introduced using a phased-in approach, beginning with trucking companies in January 2012 followed by shippers and other freight companies. In order to prepare for the January 2012 launch, NRCan will conduct a pilot of the trucking portion of the SMARTWAY program in November 2011.

The objective of the pilot is to make sure that the Canadian version of the SMARTWAY truck FLEET tool for trucking companies is user friendly and functional prior to the program launch in January 2012.

NRCan has adapted the US version of the SMARTWAY Truck FLEET tool to include a French language option and metric measurements. The Truck FLEET tool provides trucking companies with a standardized way of measuring, assessing, and tracking improvements in fuel efficiency, as well as carbon, NOx and PM emissions.

Pilot participants will be asked to complete the Truck FLEET tool and submit it to NRCan by November 30, 2011. After submitting the tool, NRCan will contact participants with a few brief questions in order to gain an understanding of their experience with the tool.

Your time and feedback are greatly appreciated!
