The technology that goes into an R-2000 certified home has been proven through several decades of research and used in thousands of homes across Canada.

More than 25 years ago, government researchers, new home builders, and other industry partners began looking for a better way to build new homes. Their goal was to blend the traditional strengths of Canadian homes with solid construction combined with space efficient designs, affordability and leading edge technology.

Your house is a system

The building science that emerged from this research recognized that a house works as a system; and that every element in the home affects durability, performance and homeowner comfort.

Hence, in order to build a better home, the design, selection of building materials and construction techniques must work together. The internationally accepted Canadian “house as a system” concept is based on solid building science that has created the foundation for today's R-2000 program and many similar programs around the world.

State-of-the-art technology

The R-2000 Standard is a comprehensive set of requirements related to energy efficiency, indoor air tightness quality and the use of environmentally responsible products and materials. This standard is regularly revised and is improved as leading-edge technologies are tested and become available on the market.

Trained and licensed home builders

R-2000 certification extends to the professionals who build R-2000 certified homes. Across Canada a network of new home builders and service providers have been specially trained and licensed to build homes that meet these high energy efficiency standards.

A home that is certified to the R-2000 Standard must pass a series of independent inspections and energy efficiency tests. This attention to detail is guaranteed and the proof is in the R-2000 certificate. If the home is not certified, it has not met the R-2000 Standard.

R-2000 Air Leakage Testing

When construction of an R-2000 home is nearing completion, a certified, trained tester carries out one final procedure to ensure it meets the R-2000 Standard. The R-2000 air leakage (or blower door depressurization) test verifies that the home has been constructed with minimum cracks and air leaks in the foundation, exterior walls and roof assembly.

What's involved

  1. A special blower door – a solid panel equipped with a computer-controlled fan, which creates a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the home – is temporarily placed in one of the home's exterior doorways.
  2. All other exterior openings in the home, such as dryer vents and kitchen range hood vents, are closed or sealed to prevent air from entering the home through these sources.
  3. The blower system is activated to create a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the home. It simulates the pressure on a house in 80 km/h (50 mph) winds.
  4. The tester then takes several readings to determine the amount of air leakage. The results are averaged to ensure that the reading is as accurate as possible.
  5. The computer system operating the blower door calculates the rate at which replacement air can leak into the home.

The results

The maximum air leakage rate allowed in an R-2000 blower door test is less than half the rate typical of newly built conventional homes.

In an R-2000 home, the level of leakage must be less than 1.5 times the total volume of air in the home per hour (1.5 air changes per hour at 50 pascals). Old homes often have leakage rates eight to ten times greater than allowed in R-2000 homes!
