To display the ENERGY STAR symbol, ENERGY STAR qualified residential clothes washers and residential-style commercial clothes washers manufactured after January 1, 2011, must meet the new 2011 specification. Models remaining in stock can continue to display the ENERGY STAR symbol up to and including April 1, 2011. Thereafter, the ENERGY STAR symbol and related information must be removed from unsold, ineligible models.

To manage these transitions, retailers must either:

  • remove the ENERGY STAR portion at the bottom of the EnerGuide label, or
  • replace the entire EnerGuide label with a new label from the manufacturer

As always, the EnerGuide label must, by law, remain on the appliance until its first retail sale.

Effective April 1, 2011, in retail catalogues, the ENERGY STAR symbol must not refer to washers that cease to qualify as of January 1, 2011.

In provinces where rebates or tax exemptions are available to consumers, retailers should contact rebate-granting organizations to find out how the organizations will handle the change.

Why is the specification changing?

Since the last introduction of new efficiency levels for clothes washers in July 2009, even more energy efficient models have come into the market. To ensure that the ENERGY STAR symbol identifies only the top performers, ENERGY STAR is changing the specifications.

What will happen to products that are currently ENERGY STAR qualified?

Some products will continue to qualify and some will not. Non-ENERGY STAR qualified products can be sold because they will still meet Canada's minimum federal energy efficiency standard. Rebates may not be available, however, on models that cease to qualify.

Can retail inventory that no longer qualifies for ENERGY STAR continue to display the ENERGY STAR symbol?

Yes for three months. Models remaining in stock can continue to display the ENERGY STAR symbol up to and including April 1, 2011. Thereafter, the ENERGY STAR symbol and related information must be removed from unsold, ineligible models.

Where the ENERGY STAR symbol appears on the EnerGuide label, retailers must remove the entire ENERGY STAR section or replace the EnerGuide label with another label supplied by the manufacturer. An EnerGuide label, by law, must be affixed to the product until its first retail sale.

How will I know if a model qualifies under the old or the new specifications?

Natural Resources Canada will update the clothes washer lists on its ENERGY STAR Web site (energystar.nrcan.gc.ca) on January 1, 2011 in addition to its routine updates. The updated list will identify models that meet the new specification. A second, separate list of models that met the previous specification but no longer qualify will be posted until April 1, 2011.

Will rebate offers be honoured regardless of whether the product qualifies under the new or old criteria?

ENERGY STAR urges all rebating organizations, retailers, manufacturers to abide by the deadlines written above. It is strongly advised that before finalizing the sale with a buyer, that you check with the rebating organization to determine if the model is still eligible.
