Air Conditioners and Heat pumps under 19 kW (65,000Btu/h)

AC & HP – space–constrained – cooling SEER = 12
Heat pumps – space–constrained – heating HSPF V = 6.4
AC & HP – small duct, high velocity (SDHV) – cooling SEER = 11
Heat pumps – small duct, high velocity (SDHV) – heating HSPF V = 5.9

Where

SEER = Seasonal energy efficiency ratio – the total cooling of a central air conditioner or heat pump in Btu during its normal annual usage period for cooling, divided by the electric power usage in watt-hours during the same period

HSPF = Heating seasonal performance factor (Region V) – the total heating output of a heat pump during its normal annual usage period for heating, divided by the total electric power input in watt-hours during the same time period

Note: To compare U.S. energy efficiency levels for heat pump with Canadian levels, HSPF V is equivalent to HSPF IV/1.5

Requirements for the energy efficiency report, as listed in Schedule IV of the Regulations

  • type of product (single-phase or three-phase, single-package central air conditioner or heat pump);
  • brand name;
  • model number;
  • manufacturer;
  • name of the organization or province that carried out the air conditioner or heat pump verification and authorized the verification mark that will be affixed to the air conditioner or heat pump;
  • Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) classification;
  • phase of electric current the product uses;
  • cooling capacity in kW (Btu/h);
  • heating capacity (if a heat pump) in kW (Btu/h);
  • whether the product is:
    1. through-the-wall, or
    2. small-duct and high-velocity
  • seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER); and
  • heating seasonal performance factor and the region for the factor (if a heat pump); and
  • which of the following systems the product uses (for split-system AC/HP only)
    1. mini-split
    2. multi-split, or
    3. ducted

APPLIES TO
permanently installed air-source air-conditioner and heat pumps. Equipment types include air conditioners and heat pumps that are single package and split system, single and three-phase, with rated capacity of less than 19 kW (65,000 Btu/h)
