Team Up!

Successful energy management programs depend on employee support. Help your employees understand and become aware of energy efficiency and their investment in helping your company achieve its energy management goals. Everyone in your organization will benefit when they realize how everyday actions can reduce energy waste, decrease operating costs and increase competitiveness.

To help you develop and deliver an effective Employee Awareness Program (EAP), NRCan has developed an EAP toolkit which includes the Team Up for Energy Savings guide, posters, fact sheets, slide presentations and a sticker.

Getting Started

To start your own EAP, follow these three steps:

Step 1: Assemble Your Team

The success of your plan depends on employee support and participation. Identify individuals in your company who should be involved for a successful EAP team. Consider including:

  • Champion/leader to develop and spearhead an EAP and to delegate responsibilities
  • Plant engineer to provide information about your company's existing energy consumption and potential for improvement
  • Financial advisor to deal with budgeting
  • Representative from the public relations and/or marketing department for communications support
  • Special events coordinator to plan activities and organize events
  • Representatives from the company's quality assurance, environmental or other committees to provide practical support

Step 2: Make it Happen – Planning and Implementation

Once you have assembled your winning team, your next step is to build a solid plan. A good plan is the foundation for action and success in establishing an energy-saving culture. Your EAP team will need to discuss the following points and agree on both the plan and the actions needed to carry it out:

  • Why is your company implementing an EAP?
  • Who is the target audience?
  • What are the key messages, tools and events?
  • When will the EAP activities take place?
  • Where will activities and events be held?
  • How much will your EAP cost?

Step 3: Maintain the Momentum – Follow-Up and Evaluation

With your EAP underway, determine what is working and what is not, identify information gaps and see which activities achieve the best results. Take the following actions to continue growing your EAP as your employees become more aware of the impact they can have on energy efficiency:

  • Track your progress – take notes, gather data, find out what your energy savings are and compare them to targets or past savings
  • Tell others about your progress and solicit ideas
  • Evaluate – determine the effectiveness of the EAP
