Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use (SCIEU) - Buildings 2014 – Data Tables


Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency is pleased to provide the following data tables, produced from Statistics Canada’s Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use (SCIEU) for 2014.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As a result of fundamental methodological improvements to SCIEU 2014, this dataset is not comparable with the 2009 survey.

What are the primary differences between 2009 and 2014 data?

  • Fundamental upgrades to the survey’s methodology were applied to SCIEU 2014 and, as a result, the 2009 and 2014 datasets are neither time series nor comparable. While survey data and their estimates embrace the same concepts for both reporting periods, methodological improvements applied to identification and classification of building types have had important implications on total building counts for 2014 data vis-à-vis 2009.
  • Sampling: Statistics Canada’s Business Register (BR) is the primary source for information about potential respondents, and had been substantially updated since the SCIEU 2009.
  • Definition of key units of count: a) more complete information was used to classify buildings in 2014 into a distinct “building type” that would have been categorized as “other”, b) “building type” was provided by the respondent in 2009 but, in 2014, was also derived based on floor space.
  • Geographic coverage: collected data for 2009 supported limited regional breakdowns while the 2014 sample is only able to generate national-level data.
  • Survey operations: for 2009, all interviews were conducted in person. For 2014, collection was conducted via telephone interviewing and paper questionnaires, which led to a lower response rate.
The data in these tables are estimates. When estimates are calculated, coefficients of variation are also provided, which indicate the reliability of the estimate. The letter coding of the quality indicators is defined as follows:
