Commissioning and Recommissioning Buildings

Commissioning and recommissioning includes documentation, review, fine-tuning and verification of equipment and systems to ensure they are integrated effectively and perform efficiently as originally intended and to meet the current operating requirements and expectations of the building owner and tenants.

This is a quality-based, holistic and cost-effective process that reduces energy consumption and costs by improving building operations through the application of low to no-cost measures.

To find out more about the various phases and activities of commissioning and recommissioning, visit the Building Optimization Processes Web page.

Benefits

The more you are involved in the commissioning or recommissioning process, the lower the costs, the larger the benefits and the longer the impact. The following are some of the benefits:

  • Decreases utility bills with savings typically exceeding seven percent;
  • Boosts overall building performance;
  • Reduces expensive change orders during the construction phase by identifying design and construction issues at the outset;
  • Protects and enhances property value;
  • Increases building comfort and indoor air quality, creating a healthier and more productive working environment, and increasing occupant satisfaction and retention;
  • Prolongs the useful life of equipment and systems while reducing the need for costly reinvestment.

How the Office of Energy Efficiency Can Help

Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan’s) Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) has long recognized that building commissioning and recommissioning can offer significant energy cost savings as a result of optimized building equipment and system performance. In order to increase both the market demand and capacity for commissioning and recommissioning, the OEE and NRCan’s CanmetENERGY are developing a suite of awareness, educational and training programs, including the following case studies and technical fact sheets:
