Step 7: Track Your Savings

Once you have implemented energy efficiency measures, it is important to closely monitor and track your energy savings. This step is crucial in your overall efficiency initiative. It allows you to:

  • Protect your investment with an ongoing evaluation of the new measures
  • Identify further opportunities for maintenance and operational times
  • Identify opportunities with changes in utility rates and rate structure
  • Identify operational irregularities such as extended run times
  • Identify billing irregularities and errors
  • Relate variables such as outdoor temperature or occupancy to building energy consumption

Although it sounds complex, it can be made simple by using specialized equipment, controls and software that not only help you run your operations, but can often automatically prepare reports that can be sent to a central location in your organization. With this information in hand, your organization is in a position to continuously perform efficiency improvements.
