NRCan's ecoENERGY Retrofit – Small and Medium Organizations program ended on March 31, 2011.

Since April 2007, this initiative provided financial assistance to 710 building retrofit projects resulting in projected annual energy savings of over 1,117,480 GigaJoules or 0.1 Mt of greenhouse gas emissions.

Many utilities, governments and private sector organizations in Canada offer similar services. For more information, you can contact us.

Steps to Apply for the ecoENERGY Retrofit Incentive for Buildings

These following steps will help guide you through the proposal process for ecoENERGY Retrofit Incentive for Buildings and will make it clearer how funding works.

Steps and Timelines for the Fourth Application Period

  1. Access the latest version of the application guide and forms.
  2. Use an experienced individual or service provider to conduct a pre-project energy audit of each affected building at your own expense.
  3. Complete and sign the application form. If you do not have Microsoft Word and Excel, you can download Calc from
  4. Submit the required documents (some on paper and others electronically).
  5. We start evaluating proposals as soon as we receive them, and will notify you when we require more information.
  6. After the Government of Canada has signed a Contribution Agreement, you will have a specified amount of time to complete your project as indicated in clause 4.2 of the contribution agreement. We will notify you in writing when you can begin incurring eligible costs. Please note that in order to be eligible for an incentive all projects must be completed by March 31, 2011. Projects that are not completed by March 31, 2011 will not be eligible to receive an incentive, even if a contribution agreement has been signed by both NRCan and the company.
  7. Send us a final report and invoices within 120 days after completing the project.
  8. We may send a representative to verify or audit your project.
  9. If the completed project meets the program's criteria, we will issue a cheque.
  10. You and the OEE can celebrate your success.
